Looking Deeper into the Importance of Music Education
from:
What is music for you?
Music is for entertainment. Music is for melodic expression of feelings. Music is a form of inspiration.
There are many possible definitions that you can give to music but for most individuals, music is a powerful subject that already existed long before you were conceived by your parents. It comes in various forms. It is your mother’s heartbeat when you are still inside her womb. It is the lullaby song that makes you feel sleepy when you were still an infant. It is also the melodic sound that you hear whenever birds are singing up in the trees.
Furthermore, music is what you hear in a musical play, on your radio, in some parts of a theatrical presentation, musical variety shows, television, opera houses, and musical concerts.
Music is everywhere, indeed.
That is why even music is now invading the system of various educational institutions around the world through the inclusion of music education on the curriculum offerings. You will also find baccalaureate degrees that specialize in the study of music and its attributes.
Maybe you will wonder how important music is in your life that it needs to be included in your education. Although you prefer getting a career on other areas of discipline, you will find yourself being educated about music, how it is formed, and what importance it gives to you as an individual.
Just how important is music education in your life?
Learning and understanding music affects human development— your thinking, behavior, learning capabilities, and well-being. There are studies conducted which shows that music possesses an extensive education and brain enhancement value. For instance, if you are fond of listening to classical music, it helps you enhance your concentration and memory. Studying on a particular or several musical instruments increases your spatial reasoning skills.
If you are used to a musically-inspired environment, the atmosphere is conducive for learning. A certain study shows that when music is taught extensively in educational institutions, it helps children perform better in various subject matters such as mathematics, history, reading, science, and SAT scores. There are also cases where it helps in building confidence among children with learning disabilities which makes their learning process easier.
Individuals studying music as their preferred career later on and learning to play various musical instruments tend to be creative and have wide imagination. They also tend to develop team work skills and efficient communications which are essential attributes towards a successful life, especially during this highly-competitive era.
Music education also provides golden opportunities for our country’s economy, It helps on the creation of jobs (recording and sales of albums created by various musical artists, musical play productions), increased tax collection, enhanced tourism industry, and growth of various businesses connected to music. That is why many states around the world such as the United States and Singapore recognized the importance of music education.
Music is not only for entertainment, an expression of feelings, or an inspiration. It is a powerful tool that dramatically changes and improves everybody’s lives. It just makes sense to endorse music as an integral part of the education system and let the new generation possess its benefits. After all, they will be the one who will govern and live in this world later on.
Music is not only the alphabet song that we used to sing — it is the song of life.
