Music is a subject included in most if not every school curriculum. Romans used music for communication, healing, enjoyment and relaxation. Musical rhythm and pitch can be heard everywhere since eons ago. Observe how the birds communicate using a chirping song speech, how a mother sings a lullaby to her baby, and how the infant in the womb hear her mother’s heartbeat.
Music creates human’s deep emotions. It is being used as backgrounds in movies such as war and horror films for fear, and played at home or during religious ceremonies for worship. It invites the feeling of relaxation, relief from stress and also acts as therapy, improving mental and physical health when connection was made between music, soul and body.
Music is a helpful subject in developing children skills including self-esteem, communication, working in teams, creative thinking, imagination, discipline, calmer attitudes, invention and study skills. Remember that children have higher reception to rhythm and pitch, the primary components of music. Music is beneficial to children to gain success in life and society.
Music is an essential part of every society or community. It depicts the culture, ideals of people. The study of music lets children understand other cultures, develop empathy and compassion, prevent greedy and selfish attitude which creates bridges across various cultures, and learn to respect other races at a very young age.
Music helps in the progress of economy. Its great value can be observed. It could create jobs, boost tourism, increase taxes, and improve music related business. Music education in workplaces is necessary in building skills such as discipline and teamwork. Further, all the members of a musical group are expected to work together during their practice to come up with the best idea on how to create and achieve the sound they wanted before the actual musical performance.
Music has the ability to heal, relax and calm carving human’s brighter attitudes. Music involvement contributes to more optimism about the future, lessen activities that are not productive, minimize watching television, and prevent individuals from using alcohols or illicit drugs.
Music requires communication skills, cognitive skills and study skills that should be learned and developed by students to expand their abilities in other areas of academics to be better students. Some researchers proved that students with experience or coursework in musical appreciation and musical performances obtain higher scores in SAT, math and verbal exams compared to student without arts participation.
Music builds an environment of participation and enables the students to learn how to work effectively without resulting to inappropriate behavior or violence. Disruptive behaviors include skipping classes, trouble, drop-out; arrest and being subjected to disciplinary actions are prone to students who are not involved in music classes.
Children who are exposed to music at an early age can benefit for the increase in their IQ, reading comprehension and development of some parts of the brain involved in reasoning and language processing. Music instructions are proven to increase the child’s intelligence. Memory is improved by linking familiar songs with objects and images from the past. The connection between spatial intelligence and music helps the children to imagine and visualize solutions. This helps them to resolve problems creatively.
Music can enrich everybody. Music education should be push through in school curriculum so that the young generation could also experience its wonderful benefits. It creates wonders in human’s life challenging the mind to become a productive individual. It elevates the education of children by expanding their horizons to appreciate life.
